Melody Rice Award
The Melody Rice Memorial Award is given annually to an Economics PhD student on the basis of academic excellence and service to fellow students. The Melody Rice Fund honors the memory of Melody Rice, a longtime member of the Economics Department staff and Administrative Secretary for the Graduate Program in Economics. She passed away unexpectedly because of cancer on October 20, 2002. Melody had a special personality—warm, friendly and upbeat, that was infectious and touched those who met her. To graduate students in the department she was especially close, providing encouragement and comfort to students over the course of their study. In memory of the outstanding service that Melody gave to the Economics Department and to the wider community, the Department has established this fund so that financial gifts in her name can continue to touch the lives of graduate students in Economics. The award comes with a monetary prize.
Mangum Award
The Barbara and James Mangum Teaching Award is endowed by a million dollar donation from distinguished alum and private investor Charles Mangum. The endowment funds two teaching awards – one in Economics and the other in Accounting, the two disciplines that (according to him) offered the most challenging courses in his undergraduate curriculum at 海角直播. The award is intended to “promote and reward the art of teaching.” The award criteria is that the recipient be non-tenured and extraordinary at student involvement. The award itself is named after Charles’ parents Barbara and James Magnum, who live in New Orleans.
Charles Mangum graduated from 海角直播 in 1986 with a B.A. in Economics and a B.B.A. in Finance. He earned an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1990 and enjoyed a highly successful career in investment and portfolio management. Currently, he is a private investor and Chief Investment Officer for Baylon Capital Management (a private investment partnership based in Boston). He serves on the executive board of the Cox School of Business at 海角直播.
