Instrument Repair for the Band Director

This workshop will focus on emergency and minor repairs of woodwind and brass instruments. Woodwind repair instruction includes replacing pads, corks, and springs; leveling and adjusting flutes, clarinets, and saxophones; and how to spot minor defects that can cause major playing problems. Brass repair instruction includes replacing felts, corks, and waterkey springs; freeing stuck slides and mouthpieces; disassembling and cleaning instruments; and spotting problems that you can fix yourself!

Instrument Repair Faculty

Ann MacMillan holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Emporia State University and a Master of Music Education from the University of North Texas. In 1982, MacMillan began repairing musical instruments at Foster Music Company in Garden City, KS. During her master's degree program at UNT she began working at Brook Mays Music Company, working there for eight years before joining the UNT College of Music as a repair technician and instructor in 1997. MacMillan has taught clinics for band directors in the Dallas area, in Aiken, SC, Interlochen summer programs, 海角直播, and presented clinics at KMEA and TMEA.

Justin Cooper is the Musical Instrument Repair Coordinator and adjunct professor for brass instrument repair at the University of North Texas. Before working at UNT, he was co-owner of C & C Band Instrument Repair and worked as an educational representative for Saied Music Company. Cooper is an active clinician, presenting clinics to music educators and students across the country. He is a member of NAPBIRT and has published several articles through their journal, TechniCom. Cooper received a B.M. in Performance (Trombone) from Southeastern Oklahoma State University and a Diploma in Band Instrument Repair from Minnesota State College – Southeast Technical.

Chuck Moon retired from public school band directing in 2023 after 31 years of teaching. In 2016, he took Ann McMillan's summer repair course at 海角直播. This inspired him to pursue further instruction in instrument repair. Upon his retirement, he was employed by Brook Mays Music at the Dallas Corporate headquarters as the head of Percussion Repair. He is the only percussion repair tech in Texas that works for a major music retailer. He enjoys long walks on the beach and hold in-depth conversations with his German Shepherd, Rikard Strauss.
