Requirements for Protocol Approval

海角直播 (海角直播) maintains an active Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) to establish guidelines and policies that promote biological safety in research and teaching laboratories. The IBC ensures that laboratory personnel are properly trained and that research involving biological hazards complies with federal regulations and institutional standards.

This page outlines the requirements for IBC protocol approval, ongoing maintenance, and laboratory compliance.

IBC Protocol Approval and Maintenance

All research and teaching activities involving recombinant DNA (rDNA), biohazardous materials, infectious agents, or other biological hazards require IBC review and approval prior to initiation.

IBC responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing and approving new biosafety protocols
  • Processing amendments to existing approved protocols
  • Conducting annual reviews
  • Managing three-year (de novo) renewals
  • Verifying required training compliance
  • Confirming annual laboratory inspections

Approval must be maintained through timely submissions, completed training, and documented lab inspections.

IBC Protocol Application

All investigators conducting research involving biohazardous materials must submit an IBC application through Cayuse Hazard Safety prior to beginning work.

Protocols must clearly describe:

  • Biological agents and materials used
  • Risk group classification
  • Biosafety level (BSL)
  • Containment practices
  • Engineering controls
  • Waste disposal procedures
  • Emergency response procedures

Amendments must be submitted for any significant changes, including:

  • Addition of new personnel
  • Changes in research scope
  • Addition of new biological agents
  • Changes in containment level

Training Requirements

Principal Investigators (PIs), Teaching Lab Instructors, and all research personnel listed on an IBC protocol must:

  • Complete required biosafety and laboratory safety training
  • Maintain current training certifications

Research personnel are required to complete all required training managed through Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) and Research Integrity & Compliance (RIC) before being approved on an IBC protocol.

Biosafety/Biosecurity curricula apply to 海角直播 employees and students working in research or teaching labs involving biohazardous materials.  Online training courses are accessible through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program using Single Sign-On (SSO) and through SciShield.

Biosafety Training Overview

海角直播 researchers must complete Biological Safety training in accordance with OSHA requirements. Training topics include:

  • Biohazards and bloodborne pathogens
  • Risk groups and biosafety levels
  • Engineering and administrative controls
  • Microbiological work practices
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Spill and emergency response
  • Biological waste management
  • Decontamination procedures

Lab Inspections

Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) conducts annual laboratory safety inspections for all research and teaching laboratories.

Inspections assess compliance with:

  • IBC policies
  • Federal funding requirements
  • Permit conditions
  • Biosafety best practices

Laboratories containing chemical, biological, and/or physical hazards are inspected annually. Inspections are required for initial IBC approval and must remain current for protocol renewals.

Training verification is confirmed by EHS at the time of inspection.

For inspection scheduling, contact EHS at 214-768-2083.

During annual reviews and three-year renewals, Research Integrity & Compliance staff verify:

  • Training records for all listed personnel
  • Lab inspection documentation with EHS

IBC renewals will not be issued without verified compliance.

Human Subjects and Animal Research Involving Biohazards

Investigators conducting:

  • Human subjects research involving biohazardous materials
  • Animal research involving infectious agents or biological hazards

must obtain IBC approval prior to receiving full approval from:

  • The Institutional Review Board (IRB)
  • The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

IBC approval is required before IRB or IACUC final approval when hazardous biological materials are involved in the research protocol.

For questions regarding IBC submissions, training, or compliance requirements, please contact Research Integrity & Compliance or Environmental Health & Safety.
