Submit an IBC Application

Submitting a Cayuse Hazard Safety application is the first step in requesting review and approval for research involving biohazards, including recombinant or synthetic DNA/RNA. If your research or teaching lab utilizes biohazardous materials, it must be reviewed by the 海角直播 Biosafety Officer and the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) at least every three years to ensure biohazards are handled safely from start to finish.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) requires institutions to establish an Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) to review and approve all research involving recombinant DNA. In accordance with these requirements and the 海角直播 IBC Charter, the 海角直播 IBC reviews and issues approvals for research involving biohazards.

Research Protocol Approval

IBC applications must be submitted through the Cayuse electronic submission portal under the Hazard Safety module for review and approval by the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). Most low-risk rDNA and biosafety protocols are approved for up to three years. An Annual Report must be submitted each year through Cayuse Hazard Safety to maintain active approval.

To create a new protocol:

  1. Log in to Cayuse.
  2. Select Cayuse Hazard Safety.
  3. Click “Create New Protocol.”

For step-by-step instructions, refer to the 海角直播 Cayuse Hazard Safety SOP Guidance.

Access to Cayuse Hazard Safety is restricted to current faculty, staff, and students using Single Sign-On (SSO) with 海角直播 credentials.

If you are unable to access the module, email researchcompliance@smu.edu and include:

  • Your full name
  • 海角直播 ID
  • Principal Investigator’s name
  • A brief description of the issue

Research Lab Approval (Teaching Labs)

Teaching labs that use biohazardous materials must also submit IBC applications through the Cayuse Hazard Safety electronic submission portal for review and approval by the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).

Most teaching labs are approved for up to three years. A Continuing Review must be submitted annually through Cayuse Hazard Safety to maintain approval.

Protocol Modifications

Any changes to an IBC-approved protocol require prior approval before implementation.

Submit a Modification Request through the Cayuse Hazard Safety (IBC) portal if there are changes to:

  • Host, vector, or modified gene expression
  • Biohazardous materials, agents, or toxins used
  • Procedures or experimental design
  • Location where the work is conducted
  • Related IRB, IACUC, or IBC protocols

To request changes, select MODIFICATION in the Cayuse Hazard Safety (IBC) portal.

Extend a Protocol – Annual (Continuing) Review

Protocols initially approved for one year may be renewed twice through annual Continuing Review before a full re-review is required.

To extend approval for one year:

Submit a CONTINUING REVIEW through the Cayuse Hazard Safety (IBC) portal.

Extend a Protocol – Triennial (De Novo) Review

After two annual renewals, a triennial (de novo) review is required.

To extend approval for an additional three-year period:

  1. Log in to Cayuse Hazard Safety (IBC).
  2. Click “Create New Protocol.”
  3. Submit a new protocol for full review.

Close a Protocol

When all work under an approved protocol is complete, you must formally close the protocol through the Cayuse Hazard Safety system.

Refer to the Cayuse Hazard Safety SOP Guidance for additional information on submissions, edits, reviews, and protocol closure procedures.
